Arabfields, Mira Sabah, Special Economic Correspondent, Nairobi, Kenya — African scientists and agricultural educators are being offered new opportunities to strengthen sustainable farming through the African Plant Nutrition Outreach Fellowship, a program designed to improve soil fertility management and the adoption of modern nutrient practices across the continent.
The 2026 fellowship provides grants of US$5,000 to qualified scientists, extension specialists and educators working in African research institutions, universities, nonprofit organizations and the private sector. Rather than funding laboratory research alone, the initiative focuses on practical outreach activities that help farmers apply proven techniques to improve crop productivity and soil health. Applications are accepted in both English and French, with proposals expected to demonstrate measurable benefits for farming communities.
Agricultural professionals say the greatest challenge is often not developing new technologies but ensuring that farmers receive reliable information. Grace Mwangi, an extension officer in central Kenya, said many growers are eager to adopt better nutrient management practices once they understand the long-term economic and environmental benefits. She believes training sessions and demonstration plots supported by the fellowship can significantly improve local food production.
Applicants are encouraged to design innovative communication tools, organize training events, develop educational materials and strengthen partnerships between researchers and farming communities. Projects aligned with priorities such as precision agriculture, soil health, nutrient stewardship and water management are expected to receive particular attention during the selection process. Female professionals are also strongly encouraged to participate as part of broader efforts to increase diversity in agricultural research and extension.
The fellowship reflects growing recognition that healthy soils remain essential to Africa’s food security. According to agricultural experts, improving fertilizer efficiency and nutrient management could help farmers increase yields while reducing production costs and limiting environmental impacts.
