Chongqing Expands Farm Exports

Arabfields, Farah Benali, Economic Correspondent, China — Agricultural producers in Chongqing are reporting strong export growth as the municipality accelerates its shift from selling raw farm products to marketing higher value processed goods. Local officials and industry leaders say the strategy is helping businesses reach new international markets while improving returns for farmers.

During the first half of 2026, Chongqing’s agricultural exports climbed 58.1 percent from a year earlier to 1.34 billion yuan, reflecting stronger overseas demand, improved logistics and a broader range of processed food products. The increase has been driven by investments in modern processing facilities and integrated supply chains that connect farms, factories and export markets.

At a lemon processing facility in Tongnan District, workers sort fresh fruit before directing premium produce to export markets across Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Fruit that does not meet fresh market standards is transformed into pectin, essential oils and freeze dried products destined for customers in Europe, Japan and South Korea. Employees at the plant say the expanded product portfolio has reduced waste while creating more stable business throughout the year.

Hu Zejiang, who oversees the local lemon industry association, said the sector has changed significantly over the past few years. Instead of relying almost entirely on fresh fruit sales, companies now generate additional revenue from processed products, allowing producers to earn higher margins and reduce their exposure to seasonal price swings. More than 60 percent of Chongqing’s fresh lemon exports are now shipped to member economies of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, highlighting the growing importance of regional trade links.

The export momentum reflects a broader transformation taking place across China’s agricultural sector, where producers are investing in food processing, cold chain logistics and digital supply management to improve competitiveness in overseas markets. Analysts say value added products are becoming an increasingly important source of export growth as global buyers seek reliable suppliers capable of meeting strict quality standards.

Industry experts expect Chongqing to continue expanding its agricultural exports over the next several years as more producers invest in processing capacity and modern farming technologies. If international demand remains strong and regional trade agreements continue to support cross border commerce, the municipality is expected to strengthen its position as one of western China’s leading agricultural export hubs while delivering higher incomes for farming communities and creating new opportunities in global food markets.
