Robusta, known scientifically as Coffea canephora, has increasingly attracted attention from coffee producers and multinational buyers because it can tolerate higher temperatures than arabica. Its growing role in the global market has also been driven by rising demand for instant coffee and blends, while climate pressures have made arabica cultivation increasingly difficult in several producing regions.
In 2026, robusta accounts for roughly 43% of global coffee production, compared with about 30% in earlier years, reflecting a major shift in the industry’s search for varieties capable of coping with a warmer climate.
But the latest scientific findings suggest that higher tolerance to heat does not necessarily make robusta fully resilient to climate change.
The research points to one major weakness, water. Although robusta can withstand warmer conditions better than arabica, it remains vulnerable to drought. This distinction could become increasingly important as climate change brings more irregular rainfall and longer dry seasons to many coffee-growing regions.
For coffee farmers, particularly smallholders whose livelihoods depend on a single annual harvest, the difference is far from academic.
A farmer may be able to cope with rising temperatures, but prolonged water shortages can still damage trees, reduce yields and increase the costs of maintaining production. In regions where irrigation is unavailable or too expensive, the risks could be even greater.
The issue is particularly significant for major robusta-producing countries such as Vietnam, Brazil and India, where irrigation plays an important role in maintaining production. As water resources come under increasing pressure, the long-term sustainability of this model could become more uncertain.
Recent research published in 2026 has reinforced those concerns. Studies examining robusta production have found that changing rainfall patterns, water availability and increasingly severe dry seasons are becoming central challenges for the crop.
The warning comes at a time when the coffee industry is investing heavily in robusta as part of its response to climate change. Higher global demand has encouraged producers to expand plantations and develop new varieties, with the expectation that robusta could help compensate for future losses in arabica production.
The latest findings suggest that this strategy may need to be reconsidered.
Rather than replacing arabica with robusta, producers may need to invest more heavily in irrigation efficiency, agroforestry, improved varieties and farming systems designed to cope with both heat and water stress.
For African coffee-producing countries, the debate carries particular importance. Millions of households across the continent depend directly or indirectly on coffee, and changing climate conditions are already affecting growing seasons, rainfall patterns and agricultural productivity.
Evidence from coffee-growing communities shows that farmers are increasingly turning to adaptation measures. Agroforestry, crop diversification, improved varieties and soil and water conservation are becoming more important as producers attempt to protect their farms against unpredictable weather.
The future of robusta may therefore depend less on the assumption that the crop is naturally climate-proof and more on how quickly farmers can adapt their production systems.
If current climate trends continue, demand for robusta is likely to remain strong in the coming years. But the new research suggests that expanding production without addressing water risks could create another vulnerability for the global coffee industry.
For consumers, the consequences could eventually be reflected in coffee prices and supply. For farmers, the stakes are more immediate, involving the survival of crops, household incomes and the ability to continue producing coffee in increasingly unpredictable conditions.
The industry’s next challenge will be to turn climate resilience from a promise associated with a single coffee species into a broader strategy built around better farming practices, stronger water management and investment in the people who grow the world’s coffee.
