US Halts Dominican Mango Imports

Arabfields, Isabela Valentina Montemayor, Correspondent, Mexico — The United States has temporarily suspended imports of fresh mangoes from the Dominican Republic after federal authorities determined that the country had not fully complied with long-standing phytosanitary requirements aimed at controlling the Caribbean fruit fly. The decision has created uncertainty for growers and exporters, although Dominican officials insist the overall impact on the current export season will be limited.

According to the Dominican Ministry of Agriculture, between 85% and 90% of the country’s yellow-skinned mango exports had already reached the U.S. market before the suspension took effect. The industry has already generated approximately $35 million in export revenue during 2026 and still expects total exports to exceed $50 million by the end of the year, supported by continued shipments to European markets.

Farmers in key producing regions are now working closely with agricultural inspectors as authorities introduce stricter monitoring measures. New teams have been assigned to inspect fruit fly traps, update pest distribution maps and strengthen field surveillance. Growers say protecting market access remains their highest priority, as thousands of jobs across farming, packing and logistics depend on the export business.

Officials stressed that exports to Europe continue without disruption because the phytosanitary issue affecting U.S. shipments has not impacted European requirements. The country also plans to accelerate corrective actions, including expanded pest control programs and stronger compliance with international inspection standards.

The Dominican Republic has spent years building its reputation as one of the Caribbean’s leading mango exporters. Improved farming practices, better post-harvest handling and investments in quality certification have helped local producers compete in demanding overseas markets. Industry representatives believe these foundations will support a rapid recovery once U.S. authorities confirm that all required measures have been implemented.

Looking ahead, agricultural analysts expect Dominican mango exports to regain momentum if the enhanced phytosanitary program delivers measurable improvements during the next production cycle. Continued demand in Europe, combined with renewed access to the U.S. market, could allow exporters to expand international sales and strengthen the country’s position in the global mango trade over the coming seasons.
