Youth Seen as Key to Africa’s Farm Future

Arabfields, Sana Dib, Financial Correspondent, Johannesburg, South Africa — African leaders and agricultural stakeholders are placing greater emphasis on youth participation as a central pillar of the continent’s new agricultural development strategy. Policymakers argue that lasting progress will depend not only on investment in farming but also on giving young people meaningful opportunities to influence decisions, launch businesses and adopt modern agricultural technologies.

The renewed focus comes as many African countries work to strengthen food security while responding to rapid population growth, climate pressures and changing labor markets. Governments are increasingly encouraging innovation, digital agriculture and entrepreneurship as ways to attract a new generation to a sector that remains essential to economic development.

Young entrepreneurs involved in farming say they want more than financial support. Many believe they should have a stronger voice in shaping agricultural policies, particularly those affecting access to land, financing and technology. Community organizations working with rural youth report that many graduates are interested in agriculture but continue to face barriers that limit their ability to build sustainable businesses.

In 2026, people under the age of 35 account for nearly 70% of Africa’s population, making youth engagement one of the continent’s most significant development priorities. Agriculture continues to provide employment for more than half of the workforce in many African economies, while demand for food is expected to rise steadily as urban populations expand. Analysts estimate that agricultural output will need to increase substantially over the next two decades to meet future consumption needs.

Development specialists say empowering young farmers through education, digital tools and improved access to markets could significantly raise productivity while creating new employment opportunities. Greater participation in agricultural decision making is also expected to encourage innovation, strengthen rural economies and improve resilience against climate related challenges.

Looking ahead, experts believe Africa’s agricultural strategy has the potential to deliver stronger results if governments consistently involve young people in policy development and investment planning. Continued expansion of rural infrastructure, financial services and agricultural technology could help transform farming into a more attractive and profitable career, supporting long term food security and sustainable economic growth across the continent.
