Cocoa Prices Slide Further in New York

Arabfields, Sophia Daly, Financial Analyst specialized in Agriculture and Futures Markets — Cocoa prices extended their decline on the New York futures market, adding to a period of weakness that intensified toward the end of September. The December 2026 contract settled at around $5,367 a metric ton on Sept. 30, down 0.76%, after falling 3.24% in the previous session.

The move reflects a changing view of the global cocoa market. After a period of exceptionally high prices, traders are increasingly focusing on supply prospects and whether demand will be strong enough to absorb available volumes.

Longer-dated contracts also moved lower. The March 2027 contract settled at about $5,474 a ton, while the May 2027 contract ended near $5,537. The structure of the market suggests that traders continue to see pressure on prices over the coming months.

The decline comes as the market keeps a close watch on production prospects in West Africa, particularly in Ivory Coast and Ghana. Weather conditions remain a key factor for growers, while expectations for available supplies continue to influence trading decisions.

For farmers, the decline comes at a sensitive time. After the sharp increase in cocoa prices over the past several years, lower futures prices could affect decisions on sales, storage and investment in plantations. For chocolate manufacturers, however, a sustained decline could eventually ease some of the pressure created by high raw-material costs.

The move is also being reflected in Brazil. Local cocoa prices fell sharply toward the end of September, with prices in Bahia reaching around 263 reais per arroba, down 7.07%. In Espírito Santo, prices stood at about 1,108 reais per bag, a decline of 6.81%.

The outlook for the coming months will depend on several factors. Weather conditions in West Africa will remain particularly important because any deterioration in production prospects could quickly provide support to prices. Conversely, improving supplies combined with weaker demand could keep the market under pressure.

Early October trading showed that the trend remained fragile. Cocoa was trading near $5,190 a ton on Oct. 1, with the market down more than 17% over the previous month. Market projections point to relatively moderate price levels toward the end of the quarter, although those expectations could change quickly as new production and demand data emerge.

The next challenge for the cocoa market will be determining whether the current decline represents a temporary correction or the beginning of a longer period of adjustment. For farmers and chocolate producers alike, upcoming information on harvests, sales and consumption will be closely watched as the market searches for a new balance.
