Mexican Grape Growers Face Tough Season

Arabfields, Isabela Valentina Montemayor, Correspondent, Mexico — Mexico’s table grape industry has navigated one of its most unusual marketing seasons after an exceptionally early harvest created unexpected pressure across the North American market. Warm spring temperatures accelerated fruit development, allowing growers in Sonora to begin harvesting two to three weeks ahead of the traditional schedule. While the early crop delivered high-quality fruit, it also led to an oversupplied market and lower prices for producers.

According to industry estimates, nearly nine million boxes of Mexican table grapes had already reached the United States during the first part of the 2026 campaign, compared with about three million boxes during the same period a year earlier. The rapid increase in supply coincided with remaining shipments from Chile and production from other Mexican regions, limiting the usual market transition and placing downward pressure on prices. Export values that initially approached 37 dollars per 8.2 kilogram box later fell to between 16 and 18 dollars as inventories increased.

Growers say the season has required difficult decisions in the field. Many producers chose to export only premium fruit that met strict quality requirements, accepting lower overall volumes in exchange for protecting the reputation of Mexican grapes in international markets. Revised industry estimates now point to a harvest of around 16 million boxes, below the original expectation of 18 to 19 million boxes. Despite the reduction, producers report that fruit quality has remained strong and rejection rates have stayed historically low.

Workers across vineyards and packing facilities have continued adapting to the unusual pace of the season. Harvest crews completed field operations earlier than expected, while exporters adjusted logistics to move fruit quickly into retail channels. Many growers believe the experience highlights the growing impact of changing weather patterns on production calendars and marketing strategies.

Looking ahead, analysts expect Mexican producers to continue investing in premium grape varieties, improved forecasting, and more flexible export planning. If weather conditions remain unpredictable, the industry is likely to place greater emphasis on matching harvest timing with consumer demand. Although competition in the North American market is expected to remain intense, strong fruit quality and continued investment in production efficiency should help Mexican table grapes maintain their position among the region’s leading fresh fruit exports.
