Arabfields, Maleeka Kassou, East, West & Central Africa Agriculture Correspondent — Nigeria has taken another step toward modernizing its agricultural sector by introducing a satellite and artificial intelligence platform designed to improve policy planning and strengthen food security. The initiative, developed through a partnership with OCP Africa and Ground Truth Analytics, will provide authorities with real-time information on crop production, land use and agricultural risks across the country.
The new system is expected to support decision-makers with more accurate data on cultivated land, expected harvests and potential threats affecting agricultural output. The first deployment phase covers 15 priority states, where satellite imagery and AI-powered analysis will help government agencies monitor farming activities more efficiently and respond faster to emerging challenges.
Agriculture remains one of Nigeria’s largest economic sectors, employing millions of people and contributing significantly to national output. In 2026, food security continues to rank among the government’s highest priorities as population growth, climate variability and supply chain disruptions place increasing pressure on domestic food production. Officials believe access to reliable agricultural intelligence will improve resource allocation and support more effective farming policies.
Farmers have welcomed the initiative with cautious optimism. Several producers say better information on weather conditions, crop performance and soil quality could help them make planting decisions with greater confidence while reducing production risks. Agricultural experts also expect the technology to strengthen cooperation between public institutions, researchers and private sector partners working to increase productivity.
The platform builds on years of digital agricultural mapping carried out by OCP Africa across several African countries. By combining satellite imagery, field observations and artificial intelligence, the system can identify crop types, estimate yields and monitor agricultural land throughout the growing season, providing policymakers with timely information for strategic planning.
Looking ahead, analysts expect Nigeria to expand the platform beyond the initial rollout if the first phase delivers measurable improvements in crop monitoring and policy implementation. By the end of the decade, wider adoption of satellite intelligence could contribute to higher agricultural productivity, more efficient public investment and stronger resilience against climate-related disruptions, positioning Nigeria among Africa’s leading adopters of digital agriculture technologies.
