Algeria’s Olive Oil Export Boom

Arabfields, Sophia Daly, Financial Analyst specialized in Agriculture and Futures Markets — Algeria’s olive oil industry is experiencing unprecedented growth as rising production and strong international demand drive export revenues higher during the first half of 2026. The sector is increasingly positioning itself as a major player in the global olive oil market, supported by a reputation for producing some of the highest-quality olive oils in the world.

Between January and June 2026, Algeria exported an estimated 28,500 tonnes of olive oil, generating approximately $185 million in revenue. Compared with the same period a year earlier, export volumes increased by nearly 72 percent, while export earnings rose by around 58 percent. The strong performance comes despite a moderate decline in average international prices, highlighting the growing competitiveness of Algerian producers in foreign markets.

The export surge follows an exceptional harvest. National olive oil production is expected to exceed 150,000 tonnes during the 2025/2026 season, marking one of the largest outputs in the country’s history. The increase has provided exporters with larger volumes while allowing them to pursue new commercial opportunities across several continents.

In olive-growing regions such as Tlemcen, Jijel, Sig, Mascara, Relizane and Ain Temouchent, producers describe the season as one of the most successful in decades. Modern mills have operated at full capacity as exporters respond to rising orders from international buyers seeking premium-quality olive oil.

“We are seeing growing recognition of Algerian olive oil abroad,” said an olive oil producer in western Algeria. “Buyers are increasingly looking for products with strong traceability, authentic Mediterranean origins and high quality standards.”

Algerian olive oil has gained increasing recognition in recent years through awards earned at international competitions. Industry specialists note that the country’s favorable climate and ongoing modernization of olive farms have helped produce oils capable of competing with some of the finest products available on global markets.

Europe remained the leading destination for Algerian olive oil exports during the first six months of 2026, accounting for nearly 60 percent of shipments. Demand also strengthened in Canada, the United States, Gulf countries and several Asian markets, where consumers are increasingly seeking premium olive oils with certified origins.

The sector is gradually shifting away from bulk exports toward bottled and branded products. Exporters believe that promoting Algeria’s reputation for quality could significantly increase profit margins and strengthen the country’s position in high-value international markets. Several companies have already expanded packaging operations to target specialty retailers and gourmet food distributors abroad.

Looking ahead, analysts expect exports to continue expanding during the second half of the year. If current trends persist, annual shipments could surpass 55,000 tonnes and generate more than $350 million in export revenue by the end of 2026. Continued investment in quality certification, modern processing facilities and international marketing campaigns is expected to support this growth.

Industry observers believe Algeria has the potential to become one of the Mediterranean region’s leading olive oil exporters over the next decade. With record production, expanding access to foreign markets and growing international recognition for the quality of its olive oil, the country is steadily strengthening its position as a premium supplier in the global olive oil industry.
