Mexico’s Avocado Industry Unveils Ambitious Sustainability Plan, Aiming for Net-Zero Emissions by 2035
The Avocado Institute of Mexico (AIM) has announced a groundbreaking initiative designed to strengthen environmental stewardship within the country’s thriving avocado industry. Dubbed Path to Sustainability , the program unites key players from the grower-exporter association Apeam and the Mexican Hass Avocado Importers Association (MHAIA). Together, they have set clear commitments and measurable targets to build on existing sustainability efforts.
Developed in collaboration with industry stakeholders and environmental consultants from Pollination Group and Innovagro, the strategy focuses on four critical areas: water management, biodiversity conservation, climate action, and deforestation prevention. These priorities aim to transform the avocado supply chain into a model of sustainable agriculture.
Water Resource Management
By 2026, the industry pledges to implement a comprehensive sustainable water resource management program across all production zones, including orchards and packing facilities. Currently, over 60% of Michoacán’s avocado orchards rely solely on rainfall, while 35% employ advanced irrigation techniques such as drip irrigation and micro-sprinkling. This initiative complements ongoing watershed conservation efforts under Apeam’s Forest Restoration program, ensuring that water resources are used responsibly and replenished effectively.
Biodiversity Conservation
This year, the industry will roll out a strategic action plan to conserve biodiversity and enhance ecological connectivity. Efforts include integrated pest management, pollinator protection, and reforestation projects. Notably, MHAIA’s partnership with Forests for Monarchs has already resulted in the planting of over 1.6 million trees. These initiatives aim to protect and restore local ecosystems, safeguarding diverse plant and animal species while improving overall ecosystem health.
Climate Action and Carbon Neutrality
In its commitment to combat climate change, the Mexican avocado industry is working toward achieving a net-zero carbon footprint across the entire supply chain by 2035. This ambitious goal includes reducing environmental impacts and enhancing carbon sequestration through innovative practices. The industry’s proactive approach underscores its dedication to mitigating climate risks while fostering sustainable growth.
Deforestation Prevention
By 2035, the industry aims to achieve a net-zero deforestation landscape through close collaboration with government authorities. A baseline study will be conducted this year to identify forested areas requiring protection, restoration, or improved management. To date, the Avocado Landscape Restoration and Reforestation Project has planted more than 3.6 million pine trees, demonstrating a robust commitment to preserving Mexico’s natural forests.
A Transformative Shift in the Industry
Environmental consultant Ernesto Enkerlin of Innovagro hailed the initiative as a “transformational shift” for the avocado sector. “This is not just about setting goals—it’s about cultivating an industry-wide ethos of sustainability that will guide us forward,” he said. “We are fostering a deep commitment to environmental stewardship at every level of our operations. By uniting diverse stakeholders, we are redefining our collective responsibility to the environment and our communities, ensuring a legacy of conscientious cultivation and lasting impact.”
Framework for Success
The Path to Sustainability is structured around five interdependent programs: Corporate Governance for Sustainability, Sustainable Orchards, Sustainable Packing Houses, Sustainable Distribution and Marketing, and Restoration of Biodiversity, Forests, and Watersheds. Transparency and accountability are central to the plan’s success. Industry leaders will provide regular updates on progress and milestones, alongside publishing a comprehensive bi-annual sustainability report.
“The avocado industry is taking bold steps to ensure that its growth aligns with environmental responsibility,” AIM stated. “Through innovation, collaboration, and measurable action, we are paving the way for a sustainable future that benefits both people and the planet.”
With these initiatives, Mexico’s avocado industry is positioning itself as a global leader in sustainable agriculture, proving that economic prosperity can coexist with environmental preservation.
