Arabfields, Isabela Valentina Montemayor, Correspondent, Mexico — Mexico’s mango industry is stepping up efforts to strengthen its supply chain as growers face increasingly unpredictable weather patterns that continue to reshape production across the country’s main farming regions.

Industry leaders, producers and exporters are expanding climate adaptation measures in an effort to protect harvests, improve fruit quality and maintain Mexico’s position as one of the world’s largest mango suppliers. The initiative comes after several seasons marked by irregular rainfall, shifting temperatures and weather-related disruptions that have affected flowering and fruit development.

In orchards across states such as Sinaloa, Michoacán and Chiapas, farmers are adopting improved irrigation systems, better orchard monitoring and more efficient crop management practices. Many growers say the changes are becoming essential rather than optional as climate conditions become less predictable.

“We have learned that every season is different now,” said producer Ricardo Hernández, who has cultivated mangoes for more than two decades. “Planning ahead and investing in new techniques gives us a better chance of protecting both our harvest and our workers.”

Mexico exported an estimated 480,000 tonnes of fresh mangoes during the 2026 season, with the United States remaining its largest destination while shipments to Europe, Canada and several Asian markets continued to expand. Despite localized production challenges, exporters reported that demand for premium-quality fruit remained resilient throughout the year.

The country’s mango sector also continues to improve traceability, post-harvest handling and logistics to reduce losses along the supply chain. Export companies are working more closely with growers to ensure fruit reaches overseas markets in better condition despite longer transportation routes and changing weather conditions.

Seasonal workers say these investments are making a noticeable difference. Better field organization and improved harvesting schedules have helped reduce delays during peak picking periods, while training programs have increased awareness of efficient water use and crop management.

Agricultural specialists believe adaptation will remain the industry’s main priority over the coming years. If current investment levels continue and weather conditions remain within expected seasonal ranges, Mexico’s mango exports could grow by between 4% and 7% by 2028. Analysts also expect stronger cooperation between growers, exporters and research institutions to improve productivity while making the supply chain more resilient to future climate challenges.
