Arabfields, Naïla Mokhtari, Special Economic Correspondent, America — Peru’s mango sector has suffered another setback after unusually high temperatures disrupted the early stages of flowering, delaying hopes for a stronger recovery following several difficult seasons.
Growers across the country’s northern production regions entered the new campaign expecting healthier orchards after signs of improvement earlier this year. Instead, record July heat has reduced flowering in many farms, raising concerns that production may once again fall short of expectations.
“We were optimistic after seeing better tree development earlier in the season,” said mango producer Carlos Medina, who manages orchards near Piura. “The heat arrived at the worst possible time. Some trees simply did not respond as we expected.”
Industry representatives say climate volatility has become one of the biggest challenges facing Peru’s mango business. Higher nighttime temperatures interfere with the natural flowering cycle, making yields increasingly difficult to predict. Farmers are also reporting greater variability between orchards, with some plantations performing normally while neighboring fields show weak fruit development.
Peru remains one of the world’s leading mango exporters, supplying major retail markets in Europe and North America. During the 2025/26 campaign, export volumes recovered compared with the severe weather losses recorded in previous seasons, although production remained below long-term potential. In 2026, industry estimates suggest exports account for more than 200,000 metric tonnes, with Europe and the United States continuing to absorb most shipments.
Exporters are monitoring crop conditions carefully as buyers prepare winter purchasing programs. While current inventories remain stable, lower production could tighten supplies later in the marketing season if flowering does not improve over the coming weeks.
Agronomists note that producers are increasingly investing in irrigation management, orchard monitoring and climate adaptation techniques to reduce weather-related risks. However, they acknowledge that extreme temperature events remain largely beyond farmers’ control.
Local workers say the uncertainty also affects rural communities that depend on seasonal harvesting jobs. Many families rely on mango production for several months of annual income, making every harvest critical for household finances.
Looking ahead, analysts believe Peru’s mango sector could gradually stabilize if weather conditions return closer to historical averages. Current projections indicate production could increase by between 5% and 8% over the next two seasons, provided flowering improves and major heat events become less frequent. Even so, climate specialists warn that rising temperature extremes are likely to remain a defining factor for the industry’s long-term competitiveness.
