Texas Watermelon Season Stays on Track

Arabfields, Naïla Mokhtari, Special Economic Correspondent, America — Texas watermelon growers are closing the 2026 season with encouraging results despite facing uneven weather conditions in parts of the state. Producers say fruit quality has remained consistently high, with sweet flavor, strong color and limited disease pressure helping maintain buyer confidence throughout the harvest.

Across South Texas and the Lower Rio Grande Valley, farm crews have spent recent weeks harvesting fields during the early morning hours to preserve fruit quality before temperatures rise. Many growers described the season as demanding but rewarding, noting that careful irrigation management and regular crop monitoring helped protect yields in areas affected by localized rainfall.

Industry data for 2026 indicates that Texas continues to rank among the leading watermelon-producing states in the United States. Shipments remained active throughout the season, while wholesale demand was supported by strong summer consumption and steady retail promotions. Premium seedless watermelons accounted for the largest share of sales, reflecting changing consumer preferences and the growing popularity of convenient fresh produce.

Growers also highlighted the importance of experienced field workers, packinghouse employees and transportation teams in keeping deliveries on schedule. Although some farms reported weather-related setbacks earlier in the growing season, most producers said fruit quality exceeded expectations, allowing them to meet customer requirements across domestic markets.

Looking ahead, industry analysts expect demand for Texas watermelons to remain stable as consumers continue to favor fresh fruit during the summer months. Continued investment in irrigation technology, crop management and logistics is expected to improve efficiency and strengthen production in future seasons. If weather conditions remain favorable, Texas growers are well positioned to maintain high-quality harvests and reinforce the state’s role as a key supplier to the U.S. watermelon market.
