Strong Dollar Weighs on Coffee Prices

Arabfields, Sophia Daly, Financial Analyst specialized in Agriculture and Futures Markets — Coffee prices ended mixed on Thursday as a stronger U.S. dollar put pressure on the market, making dollar-denominated commodities more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

The dollar index climbed to a 1.5-year high, adding to pressure on coffee futures as traders assessed currency movements alongside supply conditions in major producing countries. The stronger greenback has become an important factor for agricultural commodities, particularly coffee, where international prices are closely tied to currency fluctuations.

For coffee producers and exporters, the currency effect can quickly influence trading decisions. A stronger dollar can reduce demand from overseas buyers, while producers in countries where local currencies are weaker may receive relatively more income when export revenues are converted into domestic currency.

The impact is also being felt further down the supply chain. Coffee roasters and importers are closely monitoring futures prices and currency markets as they plan purchases for the months ahead. Consumers, meanwhile, remain exposed to higher retail prices when elevated commodity costs are passed through to supermarkets, cafés and restaurants.

The latest move comes as the coffee market continues to navigate uncertainty over production, inventories and global demand. Weather conditions in major growing regions remain a key factor for traders, while changes in consumption and export flows could determine how prices perform in the coming months.

If the dollar remains elevated, coffee prices could face continued pressure, particularly if international demand weakens at the same time. However, any deterioration in production prospects or tighter export availability could limit the downside and provide support to futures prices.

For producers, the outlook will therefore depend not only on the global price of coffee but also on exchange rates, production costs and local market conditions. For consumers, the combination of currency movements and supply risks means that coffee prices are likely to remain sensitive to developments in global markets.

With the dollar reaching its highest level in 1.5 years, traders are likely to keep currency markets firmly in focus as they assess the direction of coffee prices through the remainder of 2026.
