Murcia Lemon Crop Set for Sharp Decline

Arabfields, Leonor Fernández de Córdoba, Correspondent, Spain — Spain’s leading lemon producing region is preparing for a significantly smaller Fino lemon harvest after growers warned that production is expected to fall by around 30 percent during the 2026,2027 season. Farmers say the reduction reflects months of difficult growing conditions, including persistent water shortages, weather related stress and ongoing pest pressure.

The outlook has created mixed emotions across the citrus industry. While many producers face lower yields, several growers believe that tighter supplies could help restore healthier market conditions after previous seasons marked by weak returns and rising production costs.

Local farmer Antonio Ruiz said the past year has been one of the most demanding in recent memory. He explained that maintaining orchards has become increasingly expensive while unpredictable weather has reduced both fruit size and overall productivity. Despite the smaller harvest, he remains hopeful that stronger prices will improve farm incomes.

Recent industry estimates indicate that Spain’s total lemon production has fallen to approximately 828,000 tonnes in 2026, down from around 915,000 tonnes a year earlier. Murcia continues to account for more than 60 percent of national output, making the region’s performance especially important for European supply.

Demand across Europe has remained relatively stable, encouraging optimism among exporters. Producers also expect less competition during the early part of the season as lower production in some competing countries may reduce export volumes. However, shipments from Southern Hemisphere suppliers are still expected to influence market conditions during the opening weeks of the Spanish campaign.

Growers continue to express concern over structural challenges affecting the sector. Limited water availability, increasing operating expenses and the need for more effective crop protection remain key issues that could influence future productivity. Many farmers argue that maintaining high quality standards and full product traceability will remain essential for protecting the reputation of Spanish lemons in international markets.

If weather conditions remain generally favorable over the coming months and pest pressure stays under control, analysts expect prices to remain relatively firm throughout the season. Looking beyond the current campaign, investment in irrigation efficiency, orchard management and sustainable production practices could help stabilize output. Even so, industry experts believe harvest volumes are likely to remain below historical averages until environmental conditions improve and long term production challenges are addressed.
