South African Grape Harvest Sets New High

Arabfields, Sana Dib, Financial Correspondent, Johannesburg, South Africa — South Africa’s table grape industry has completed one of its strongest seasons on record, delivering a historic harvest while export volumes remained broadly unchanged as logistical challenges continued to limit overseas shipments.

Industry figures for the 2025/26 season show that approximately 81.25 million cartons were inspected for export, representing a 3% increase from the previous season. However, actual exports remained close to 78.3 million cartons, reflecting only modest growth as port congestion, adverse weather and shipping delays constrained the movement of fruit to international markets.

Growers across the Western Cape described the season as rewarding but demanding. Favorable growing conditions supported excellent fruit quality and higher yields, yet producers said strong production was offset by logistical bottlenecks that delayed deliveries and increased operating costs. Exporters worked closely with shipping companies to minimize disruptions and preserve fruit quality during longer transit times.

Europe and the United Kingdom continued to account for the majority of South Africa’s table grape exports in 2026, while producers also expanded their presence in Asian and Middle Eastern markets. Industry leaders believe maintaining consistent quality and reliable supply will remain essential as global competition intensifies.

Despite operational pressures, the industry’s performance demonstrated the resilience of South African growers, many of whom invested in improved farming practices, cold chain infrastructure and more efficient packing operations. Producers said these investments helped sustain export standards even during one of the most challenging logistics seasons in recent years.

Market analysts expect export volumes to improve gradually if transport infrastructure becomes more efficient and port operations stabilize. Combined with steady international demand for premium fresh fruit, another strong harvest could allow South Africa to strengthen its position among the world’s leading table grape exporters while delivering more consistent shipments to key overseas markets.
