China Fruit Market Holds Mixed Course

Arabfields, Farah Benali, Economic Correspondent, China — China’s imported fruit market showed mixed pricing trends during week 28 as seasonal supply shifts continued to reshape wholesale trading. While several categories remained stable, others experienced noticeable declines as larger volumes reached the market and buyers became more cautious.

Imported apples continued to provide one of the market’s most stable segments. Popular varieties including Royal Gala, Fuji and New Zealand Queen maintained relatively steady prices, although Ambrosia apples recorded a significant decline as supplies increased. Traders said demand remained consistent, helping prevent wider price fluctuations despite changing inventories.

The cherry market also softened during the week as larger shipments from the United States entered wholesale channels. Prices for leading varieties such as Skeena and Regina fell by around 30 to 40 yuan per five kilogram carton, reflecting stronger availability rather than weaker consumer interest. Wholesale merchants noted that retailers continued to purchase fresh arrivals, but at a more measured pace than earlier in the season.

Citrus markets presented a mixed picture. South African Star Ruby grapefruit continued to lose value, bringing prices back to levels last seen in 2024 and roughly 21% below the same period of 2025. Lemon prices also eased as South African Eureka supplies expanded, while retail prices for Chinese lemons averaged about 25.8 yuan per kilogram. In contrast, the orange market remained relatively balanced as Egyptian Valencia shipments drew to a close and fruit from South Africa and Australia gradually entered the market. Egyptian Valencia oranges traded around 80 yuan per 15 kilogram carton, about 54% below the previous season, while the first South African arrivals opened near 135 yuan, approximately 17% lower than a year earlier.

Importers said consumers continue to favor premium quality fruit, but abundant supplies have increased competition among exporters. Wholesale buyers have become more selective, focusing on freshness and pricing as inventories adjust to seasonal transitions.

Market analysts expect pricing to remain uneven through the coming weeks. Fresh arrivals from Southern Hemisphere suppliers are likely to keep pressure on citrus prices, while apples may continue to demonstrate greater stability because of balanced supply and consistent consumer demand. If logistics remain efficient and import volumes stay strong, China’s wholesale fruit market is expected to maintain adequate supplies while experiencing moderate price movements across most major categories.
